Senator Isah Jibrin (Echocho) has called for stricter enforcement of mining safety regulations and better protection for mine workers during an engagement with the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development.

The session focused on strengthening safety standards across Nigeria’s mining sector, preventing avoidable accidents, curbing illegal mining and promoting environmentally responsible operations.

Jibrin stressed that existing safety regulations must be enforced and that mining operators must comply with established standards. He called for mandatory risk assessments, regular safety training for workers, proper licensing of mining operations, and routine inspections of mine sites to identify and address hazards.

The senator also urged stronger emergency preparedness at mining locations. He said this should include access to first-aid facilities, clear evacuation procedures and reliable communication systems so that responders can act quickly in an accident or emergency.

Jibrin reaffirmed the importance of collaboration among government institutions, regulatory agencies, mining operators, workers, host communities and other stakeholders. He said such cooperation is needed to build a safer and more sustainable mining industry.
