A Federal High Court in Abuja has set November 19 to decide whether former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello is the rightful senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Kogi Central.
Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo fixed the date on Monday after counsel in the case adopted their final written addresses.
The high-stakes court battle, marked suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1085/2026, was ignited by aggrieved All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial aspirant, Momoh Yusuf Obaro, who dragged the ruling party, Yahaya Bello, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the court.
Obaro vehemently insisted that he is the legitimate, undisputed winner of the APC primary election conducted on May 18, petitioning the court to order the immediate recognition and publication of his name as the lawful candidate for Kogi Central Senatorial District.
In a fierce counter-offensive, former Governor Yahaya Bello launched a scathing legal defense, urging the court to summarily throw out the suit for lacking substance and credibility.
Bello presented official figures asserting that he clinched a decisive victory with a staggering 72,399 votes, while rival contestant Ibrahim Yakubu Adoke came a distant second with 319 votes, leaving the plaintiff wallowing at the bottom of the scoreboard with a paltry 188 votes.
Labeling Obaro’s claims as fabricated, deceptive, and legally fatally flawed due to non-compliance with affidavit requirements, Bello insisted the case deserves total dismissal.
After hearing counsel on both sides, Justice Ekwo reserved judgment and adjourned the matter to November 19.
