The Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Hon. Yunusa Gabriel Olofu has reiterated that the aim of “business premises registration” is to safeguard the authenticity of point of sale terminal (PoS) operators, miners, contractors and other businesses across the state.

This was stated during an interview session at the office of the Hon. Commissioner, where reporters from Malachite TV were trying to get an inside scoop on what the registration was about and if it differs from other tax(es).

Speaking, the reporter, Mrs. Janet Balagbogbo thanked the Commissioner and requested a clear picture on what the registration entailed, as well as what business owners stand to benefit.

Responding, the Commissioner said that the registration was not a recent development as it was actually a signed law since 2007:

He explained that “section 2, sub section 2 interprets business to include any trade, industry or profession and any occupation carried out for profit in Kogi State.

“Section 3, sub section 1 further states that premises of business of every company, firm or individual carrying on any business in the state, shall be registered in the manner prescribed in this law.

“The reason a lot of people feel business premises registration is new is because there wasn’t enough awareness.

“This has been in existence since 2007. And contrary to what you might believe, the registration is to protect the legitimacy of businesses in the stateā€¦and in turn, the token paid, is used to provide infrastructures for the people.”

Furthermore, he added that business is an entity and as such, needs to be recognized.

“When registration/payment is made at Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS), the receipt is brought to Min. of Commerce & Industry, there after you’re issued a certificate.

“This certificate proves you are legitimate and would be added to the Kogi data base. And every year, all you have to do is renew. And the renewal fee is much lesser than what you used to register”

He added that businesses should register their premises at KGIRS as soon as possible as the deadline is fast approaching.

“Register as soon as possible because the taskforce will go round after the deadline to check defaulters. Alot of projects are going around the state and we need your help to drive this revenue”
