Awoniyi Appeals to Kogi Voters to Ascertain Their Registration Status

As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), enters its second day, the Commission has been called upon to devise method by which those who are not able to collect their PVC collect them after tomorrow when the days allotted for the exercise comes to an end.

Kogi State Deputy Governor, Yomi Awoniyi made the appeal after inspecting the on- going exercise in some polling centers in Mopamuro LGA of Kogi State.

Kogi State is among the 10 states under Phase One for the distribution of the PVC alongside States like, Taraba, Gombe, Zamfara, Kebbi, Benue, Abia, Enugu, Akwa-Ibom and Bayelsa.

The distribution of PVCs is expected to last till Sunday, 25th May, 2014. Awoniyi appealed to registered voters from the area who are yet to collect their cards to visit their polling units to ascertain their registration status.

He disclosed that Persons whose data have been appropriately captured will be handed their PVCs at the polling units in accordance with set procedures.

The Deputy Governor expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout, peaceful and smooth conduct of the exercise in the area and the state in general.

Awoniyi explained that the PVC would enable people of the area exercise their right to vote in the 2015 and other future elections in the state.

Awoniyi described the people’s vote as their power, urged them to turn out enmass during the continuous voter registration slated for next week.

In her remarks, Ene Edwins, Administrative Secretary of INEC in Kogi State said the exchange of the temporary cards for the permanent cards will continue at the local government headquarters of INEC across the state.

She appealed to people of the area to however cease the on-going exercise to collect their cards as without the PVC no individual will vote in subsequent general elections.

In her words, “Those with defective data, for whom PVCs have not been produced, she added will have the opportunity to re-register during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) that holds from Wednesday, 28th May, 2014, to Sunday, 1st June, 2014.

Also speaking, Folorunsho Daniyan, Council Chairman of Mopamuro, appealed for more voter turnout.

The Chairman disclosed that in future, government patronage and other support will be based on the presentation of the PVC.

Highlight of the inspection of the on-going exercise by INEC was the presentation of the PVC to the State Deputy Governor and the Council Chairman by the Administrative Secretary of INEC.
