The National Inland Waterways Authority confirmed the capsizing occurred along the Dambo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger, a route frequently used for commercial transportation between Kogi and Niger states.

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the accident, but it has already raised concerns about the safety of waterway transportation in the region.

Senator Echocho also highlighted the growing dangers of the waterway, noting that accidents on the route have become increasingly frequent.

“The waterway connecting Kogi and Niger states has become increasingly perilous, and it is crucial that relevant authorities take immediate action to implement stronger safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future,” he said in his statement.

The senator commiserated with the families of the victims, expressing solidarity and offering assurance that the state government would provide support for the injured and those affected by the disaster.

Echocho’s statement emphasized the importance of community and government efforts to aid in the healing process for those impacted by the loss.
