The Senate, on Tuesday, passed the bill for the Establishment of Federal University of Medical Sciences, Egbe.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Smart Adeyemi (APC/Kogi West), seeks to upgrade Egbe College of Nursing, Kogi state into a full fledge university. It was one of the fresh bills introduced to the upper chamber of the National Assembly early this year.
There has been agitations for six federal medical universities to be established in the six geo political zones of the country.
Defending the merits of the bill on the floor of the National Assembly, Senator Adeyemi had argued that the 70-year old ECWA Hospital Egbe is a massive medical facility that is good enough to host a university.
ECWA Hospital, Egbe, Kogi State named after the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), was etablished in 1951 by the Canada based Sudan Interior Mission (SIM). The 121-bed multi-service complex comprises of approximately 33 acres with 68 buildings, including a College of Nursing and Midwifery.
It is situated on a major intersection between Ilorin and Lokoja, with people coming to the hospital from all over Nigeria.
