Women in Okun land, Kogi West senatorial district, have called upon to play active and decisive roles in the much anticipated 2023 general elections.
The Executive Director of Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR), Comrade Idris Miliki Abdul, made the call in a statement issued in Lokoja on Wednesday.
He wondered why women from Okun land, renowned for their industry and education, are laid back on political issues.
Miliki charged the women to brace up and make impact in the next general elections.
“As the gates to 2023 general elections open, where are the Okun women?
“Okun women can no longer be on the fence. Please, Okun women, this is your time. Don’t be left out,” he said.
In the political history of Kogi state, only two women have made it to the State House of Assembly – one from Central and the other from Eastern senatorial district. No woman has been voted into Kogi State House of Assembly from Okun land, ditto Kogi West senatorial district.
However, the only woman in Kogi state that won election into the National Assembly is an Okun woman, Olori Margaret Orebiyi under the defunct United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP). Olori Orebiyi won the House of Representatives election to represent Yagba federal constituency in April 1998 but the winners, across the country, were not inaugurated because of the collapse of General Sani Abacha’s democratic experiment. Orebiyi holds the record of being the first and only woman in the state to achieve such feat.
Miliki believes Okun women can go all the way in 2023 to change narratives.
