Kogi Deputy Governor Urges FG to Reform Fire Service

The Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Elder Simon Achuba has called on the federal government to reform the Fire Services in the country for optimal performance.
Achuba who made the call when a team of Federal Fire Services officials paid a courtesy call on the state government in Lokoja, expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the fire services in some states in the country where fire services stations existed.
He said, as important as the fire services is to mankind, the agency has not been living up to expectations as a result of lack of working equipment.
The Deputy Governor urged the government to commit resources to effective fire services delivery in the country, saying the country will be good for it, if priority is given to the area.
He further called on Federal Government to take audit of the institutions in Kogi State in order to assist the state government in providing rapid response to emergency like fire any time it occurs.
He said the state needed effective and efficient Federal fire services in the event of emergencies, while commending Governor Yahaya Bello for creating ground for a safe Kogi state.
Speaking earlier, the Commanding Officer of the Federal Fire Services, Abuja, Calistus Agu lamented the cost of fire services materials, saying lack of those essential materials contributed to the absence of Federal fire services stations in most of the states of the federation.
He stated that fire services stations in states were not only for fire incidents, adding that the services covered rescues and others.
Agu said because of the importance of the organisation to the people, the management of the agency has deployed its men to many states of the federation to assist in handling fire emergency and others.
The Commanding officer while urging government to provide the needed funding for the services, called on Kogi state to key in to the services and provide a place for the establishment of federal fire agency in the state.
