It is no longer news that the immediate past Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly and member representing Lokoja 1 State constituency, Rt. Hon. Imam Umar Ahmed is having a strained relationship with his party, the All Progressive Cingress (APC). This fallout can be traced to the circumstances that surrounded his resignation from the speakership of the State House of Assembly in 2017.
Whatever maybe the cause of the cold war, should Rt. Hon. Umar Ahmed Imam be allowed to leave, it will dealt a serious injury to the party especially in Lokoja local government.
Rt Hon Umar Ahmed Imam has established himself as a charismatic leader whose pedigree has drawn him very close to his people. He is a strong force to be reckoned with, he is seen as a beacon of hope by many people and enjoys their good will. He has spent most of his time in public service to making positive impact on his people. His past philanthropist disposition contributed to his success at the primaries and eventually his deserved victory in 2015.
While in the House, he also impacted on members of his constituency and his representation so far has been adjudged the best in recent years. In fact, upon resignation as Speaker KSHA, his home was turned into a Mecca of sort as people of all works of life devoid of party affiliation troop in to show solidarity.
He has done exceptionally well and enjoys followership that no party will want to lose such a member.
The gentle and intelligent law maker may be on his way to dump the party if nothing urgent is done. I call on the State Party Chairman, Hon Abdullahi Bello aka Dollar to as a matter of urgency and in the spirit of reconciliation which the leaders of the party is preaching across the country to wade into the matter and ensure the lawmaker and many others reconciled and reintegrated.
I also want to appeal to his Excellency Alh Yahaya Bello, the Executive Governor of Kogi State and the leader of the Party APC to make sure Rt Hon Umar Ahmed Imam remain in the party.
In the last few weeks, different political parties have wooed the lawmaker to their party. They are not oblivious of the political strength the member representing Lokoja 1 State Constituency bears.
It is not out of place that there are always rift among members of a particular party, a medium of settling members grievances should always be employed. APC should not give away members like Rt Hon Umar Ahmed Imam.
This is my passionate appeal to all stakeholders, the Rt Hon Umar Ahmed Imam must not allow to leave our party, the APC. It is the party of progressives, let’s not trade some of these progressives in our midst.
