Democracy Day: Dr. Omede Calls for Holistic Review of Nigeria’s Growth and Challenges

President, Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN), Dr. Idris Omede has called for sober reflection, a holistic review of our nation’s growth and challenges.
In a press statement, Omede opined that the since the 2018 Democracy day falls within the precincts of the Holy Month of Ramadan fast, Nigerians should devout time to pray for the peace, unity, growth and development of the components parts of the nation.
The former Commissioner for Health in Kogi State urged elected leaders to work hard towards provision of evidence-based dividends of democracy and not mere rhetoric or propaganda.
“Towards the end of last century, precisely, on the 29th May 1999, Nigerian 4th Republic materialized and was actualized. Nineteen (19) years after, democracy has continued to thrive. However, its compass is still in search of stable anchor or safe land. The joy of it, nonetheless is that our democracy continues to wobble, in the hands of elected people, uninterruptedly, with the electorate hope fully learning some lessons.
“It is our fervent desire that the country’s democracy attains the enviable desire of our people in areas of infrastructure, services, productivity, security, peace and job opportunities in a lesser time in future,  than we have spent learning the ropes.
“These will only be possible when the nation and various states of the federation become sensitive and responsive genuine need assessment of the people, addressing and implementing such.  To actualize these, the  initiatives,  innovative and productive skills of our people should be given adequate and serious attention by government at all level. The organized private sector continues to catch on this and remains a shining example under conducive and enabling environment.
“Professionals have a major stake in our nation building, growth and development. They must not be sacrificed on the altar of politics, as politics is an end to a mean, but not an end itself.
“May the coming months, begin to typify our political maturity, canvassed under good leadership, governance,  practical and evidenced based dividend of democracy and not mere rhetoric or propaganda.
“Nigerians should be wise, make informed, objective assessment, resolve and make decision for an enviable and good democracy and democratic tenets, that most people crave for'”  he said.
