Matter Of Urgent Public Importance Calling On The State Government To Intervene In The Control Of Flood And Refilling Of Agbudu Bridge In Kogi Local Government
Distinguished Rt Hon Speaker, my esteem colleagues, as the voice of Koton – Karfi, I consider this call as most desirous.
Whereas flood disaster and it’s attendant unpalatable consequences is no longer news to all of us, either locally or nationally in the recent time, it has been observed greatly that kogi local government is highly prone to excessive flood at any time.
Whereas, Agbudu bridge constructed over ten years ago by the previous government linked several riverine communities like Okofi, Etc, Odama, Ugwo, Adangere, Erenedu, Adajima to mention but few, this road is the only one that lead to these communities.
Whereas, the road linking the bridge has been completely washed and cut off from the bridge leaving communities in hardship, an effort made to provide temporary alternative by the community could only serve the pedestrian and motorcycle which could also be eroded by any rainfall.
Whereas, in order to avoid further damage to the bridge, an urgent step must be taken by refilling the bridge with rocks and laterite.
Whereas, these communities are noted for large agricultural production over the years, indeed the communities are better described as the food basket of the local government. The turn out of agricultural products in the areas is high, but at present lack accessible road to link Okpareke which is one of the popular market in the area and even Koton Karfi, the local government headquarters.
Whereas, the dense population of the people of these communities call for concern, the govt need to immediately the bridge to link the neighboring urban communities in order to access medical facilities, schools as well as the sale of their farm products.
The Rt Hon Speaker Sir, my distinguished colleagues, the greatest dividend of democracy is for the government to respond immediately to the plight of the people that found themselves in this kind of disaster. As a humane and listening house, I wish to crave your indulgence to come to the aid of these communities by supporting this motion.
PRAYERS
Be it resolved by this Hon house as follows :
1. That the house committee on works do pay an on-the-spot – visit to the area to assess the level of damage on the bridge.
2. That kogi state government should as a matter of necessity and urgency control the flood and refill the bridge with laterites.
3. That while expecting the state government intervention, the local government should provide an alternative measures to alleviate the suffering of these communities.
