Work on the construction of N1.5 billion embankment along the bank of River Niger in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, has commenced.
The state Commissioner for Environment, Taiwo Aremu, said the construction was to prevent a re-occurrence of the 2012 flood disaster. He said the early commencement of the project was to ensure that it reaches an appreciable level before the rainy season sets in.
Aremu, who said the project is a joint one between the federal and Kogi State governments, noted that the 2012 flood disaster had a terrible effect on the state.
The commissioner appealed to residents along the river bank to complement government’s effort by giving necessary cooperation to the contractor handling the project.
