In order to engender food security in Adavi Local Government Area, women farmers in the area, have appealed to the local government to revisit the promise it made about two years ago to provide them with a tractor.
This was made known last week in a report of one-day annual women farmers’ forum on advancing the course of women farmers held at Osaragada in Adavi LGA of Kogi State.
The forum was attended by women farmers’ representatives from Aku, Osara, Osaragada and Participation Initiative for Behavioural Change In Development (PIBCID).
A woman farmer from Osaragada, Sefi Salawu, revealed that the women farmers in the Area, supported by PIBCID and Action Aid, paid an advocacy visit to the then Chairman of the LG who promised to give them a tractor and efforts to get it had proved futile.
She also said women farmers contributed money to clear their lands but they could not get enough seeds to plant, and therefore appealed to government for assistance.
That was corroborated by another woman farmer, Elizabeth Anasa from Osara community, who disclosed that government approved sale of seeds and fertilizers to women farmers at subsidized prices after an advocacy visit supported by Action Aid to Agric Commissioner.
She regretted that although text messages were sent to them, they could not get the fertilizers.
The Graphic gathered that the forum was meant to x-ray some of the challenges women farmers encountered in the previous year; how they were able to access farm inputs and their active participation in cooperative groups.
