Kogi State Governor l, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has commended the member representing Omala State Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, Honorable Umar Yahaya, for investing in the future of his constituents through education-focused initiatives.

The Governor gave the commendation on Friday in Omala Local Government Area during the flag-off of the lawmaker’s Connect Back-to-School Initiative, an intervention designed to promote access to education, support vulnerable pupils and students, and create brighter opportunities for children across the Local Government area.

The initiative, tagged “From Classroom to the Future: Every Child Matters,” underscores the importance of education as a tool for human development and social transformation.

Represented by the Kogi State Commissioner for Education, Honorable Wemi Jones, the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising education and creating an enabling environment for every child in the state to achieve their aspirations.

He said his government would continue to invest in the education sector to ensure that children, regardless of their social or economic backgrounds, have access to quality education and the opportunity to succeed in life.

According to him, education remains the bridge between the disadvantaged and the privileged, stressing that every child deserves the opportunity to realise their potential through learning.

Governor Ododo urged parents and guardians to enrol their children and wards in school, noting that the state government had provided free education from primary to secondary school in public schools, alongside the payment of all entry and exit examination fees for students in public schools.

He also encouraged students to take their studies seriously and make effective use of the opportunities provided by the government and other stakeholders to build a successful future.

The Governor called on individuals, philanthropists, private organisations and corporate bodies to complement government efforts in the education sector, noting that the responsibility of funding education could not be left to government alone.

Earlier, the initiator of the programme, Honorable Umar Yahaya, said the initiative was conceived to support schools and students, particularly those from less-privileged backgrounds in Omala Local Government Area.

He explained that the programme included scholarship awards to selected pupils from ten primary schools in the area, as well as other beneficiaries across secondary schools in Abejukolo and other wards of the local government.

Honorable Yahaya disclosed that, in furtherance of the state government’s free education policy and payment of examination fees, the connect back to school initiative had been providing more than 400 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration forms annually.

He added that the programme also offered a scholarship worth ₦1 million to the highest-scoring JAMB candidate, as part of efforts to encourage academic excellence and support students in pursuing higher education.

The lawmaker said the initiative was driven by his conviction that education remained a critical pathway to success and sustainable development, urging students to remain focused, disciplined and committed to their studies.

As part of the flag-off activities, more than 5,000 educational materials, including exercise books, Mathematics and English textbooks, school bags and writing materials, were distributed to schools across Omala Local Government Area.

The initiative is expected to complement the state government’s education policies while expanding opportunities for children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to access learning resources and pursue their educational aspirations.
