A mammoth crowd on Friday welcomed the 2027 Kogi East Senatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), businessman and philanthropist, Alhaji Idris Hussein Kashim, popularly known as Idris HK, as he returned to Kogi East for a fresh round of humanitarian activities, community empowerment and political consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Idris, the most popular Senatorial candidate for 2027 election in the region, arrived in Idah before proceeding to Igalamela Odolu Local Government Area, where he was received by supporters, community leaders, youth groups and political stakeholders who turned out in large numbers to identify with his return to the district.

The reception was marked by solidarity from various groups, including the Aminu Flow Football Academy, Ajaka, the Idris HK Canvassers Movement, Women and Youths Associations and other grassroots organisations, in what supporters described as a demonstration of the growing acceptance of his political aspiration across Kogi East.

During the visit, Idris paid homage to several traditional rulers, including the Ettemahi of Ajaka, as part of his traditional and community engagements in his home area.

At the party council office, political stakeholders told the SDP senatorial candidate that his presence had put to rest what they described as doubts and rumours previously circulated about his candidature.

The stakeholders, according to those present at the meeting, assured Idris that the people were behind him and expressed confidence in his chances of emerging victorious in the 2027 Kogi East senatorial election.

Idris, however, told the gathering that his decision to contest was not driven by personal ambition or the pursuit of wealth, insisting that he was seeking the Senate seat because the challenges confronting the region had become too enormous for him to tackle alone through his personal resources.

He said he had already been blessed with enough to provide for himself and his family, stressing that his motivation was to secure the political platform and institutional capacity required to address wider challenges confronting the people.

According to him, “I am not contesting for my selfish interest. God has already provided for me and my family. I am contesting because I want to rescue our region, because my personal resources cannot handle all the changes we are facing in the land.”

Idris’ humanitarian activities have increasingly become a major feature of his public profile in Kogi East. His interventions have included electricity projects, transformers, solar-powered street lights, boreholes, scholarships, medical support, road rehabilitation and youth empowerment initiatives.

One of the most ambitious interventions associated with him is the privately funded electrification project in Ankpa and surrounding communities. Reports on the project indicate that it is designed to address years of electricity challenges in parts of Ankpa, with work extending into other areas of Kogi East.

The project is said to be the biggest individual-funded infrastructure intervention in Igala land and even Kogi State at large. Idris himself has maintained that his approach to public service is based on creating tangible impact before occupying public office.

His record of community interventions has also featured prominently in his campaign for the Kogi East Senate seat.

His political message has increasingly centred on grassroots development, youth empowerment, infrastructure and what he describes as service-driven representation.

Friday’s homecoming therefore combined political consultation with community engagement, as Idris moved through Idah and Igalamela Odolu to reconnect with traditional institutions, party structures, youth organisations and grassroots supporters.

For his supporters, the large turnout was more than a welcome ceremony. They described it as a public demonstration of confidence in a candidate they believe has already begun implementing the kind of community interventions they expect from a future senator.

With the 2027 election approaching, Idris’ return to Kogi East and the reception that greeted him are likely to further intensify political conversations across the nine local government areas of the senatorial district.
