Since assuming office in January 2024, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has pursued an administration centred consolidating infrastructural development and human capital investment, including but not limited to healthcare improvement, education, workers’ welfare, agriculture and security.

His government has repeatedly emphasized continuity while introducing new initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens across Kogi State.

The administration’s record so far includes several notable intervention projects;

  1. Massive Investment in Road Infrastructure
One of the most visible aspects of the Ododo’s administration has been its emphasis on road construction and rehabilitation. The government has undertaken road projects in urban centres and rural communities, with township roads being developed across the state’s Local Government Areas.

These road programme is intended not only to improve transportation but also to facilitate agricultural activities, strengthen commerce and connect communities to essential services.

The administration has also used the Kogi State Road Maintenance Agency (KOGROMA) in maintaining and rehabilitating roads across the state.
Improved road connectivity is particularly important for a state such as Kogi, whose strategic location makes it a major link between several parts of Nigeria.

  1. Transformation of Primary Healthcare;
Healthcare is another area in which the administration has made significant investments. The government has embarked on the renovation, remodelling and equipping of Primary Healthcare Centres across the state.

The state government has 80 revitalised Primary Health Centers have been commissioned, with facilities receiving improvements such as solar power, water supply, staff accommodation, medical equipment and security arrangements.

Earlier plans targeted the rehabilitation of more than 150 Primary Health Centers, while the government has also announced broader efforts to upgrade primary facilities to provide services closer to secondary-care standards.

The significance of this programme lies in its focus on rural communities, where residents often have limited access to quality medical services.

The administration has also introduced a monthly ₦300,000 incentive for medical doctors in the state and expanded health-insurance initiatives targeting vulnerable groups. The government says more than 76,000 pensioners, local-government workers and students have benefited from the insurance initiative.

  1. Education and Investment in Human Capital
Governor Ododo’s administration has continued to place education among its major priorities.

The government has sustained free basic and secondary education and continued the payment of examination fees for public-school students.

At the tertiary level, the administration has provided bursaries and scholarships. In one reported intervention, the governor stated that ₦316 million in bursaries was paid to more than 8,000 tertiary students.

The government has also continued infrastructure development in tertiary institutions, including projects associated with the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) and its teaching hospital.

More recently, the Kogi State Government reported that 728 public schools were undergoing renovation under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment, alongside teacher recruitment and financial assistance designed to encourage school enrolment and retention.

These interventions demonstrate an emphasis on education not simply as social spending but as an investment in the future workforce of the state.

  1. Development of Medical and Tertiary Institutions
Beyond primary healthcare, the administration has pursued improvements in higher-level medical and educational institutions rapidly consolidating efforts of he previous administration of former governor Yahaya Bello.

Governor Ododo ensure the revival and accreditation of the medical programme at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, as an important development in medical education.

The establishment and development of teaching-hospital facilities associated with Confluence University of Science Technology (CUSTECH) and Prince Abubakar Audu University are also intended to strengthen medical training and healthcare delivery in the state.

These investments could help Kogi reduce dependence on other states for specialised medical training and services.

  1. Workers’ Welfare and Pension Reforms
Another notable feature of the administration has been its attention to workers and pensioners.

The administration of Gov. Usman Ododo implemented a ₦72,500 minimum wage, introduced a ₦10,000 pension-harmonisation allowance and maintained regular salary and pension payments. He has also ensured cash-backed promotions, paid the annual leave bonuses and continue to make provisions for gratuities to local-government retirees.

Workers’ welfare is particularly significant because timely payment of salaries and pensions has a direct effect on household purchasing power and increase economic activities in state.

  1. Agriculture and Food Security
Agriculture occupies a central position in Kogi’s economy, and the Ododo administration has sought to make agriculture a stronger instrument for food security and economic empowerment.

Government initiatives have focused on supporting farmers, encouraging agro-processing and promoting value addition. The administration has presented these measures as part of an agricultural transformation agenda intended to move farmers from subsistence production towards entrepreneurship and commercial agriculture.

The broader objective is to increase local food production, reduce dependence on food imports from other states and create employment opportunities throughout the agricultural value chain.

  1. Security and Community Policing

Security remains fundamental to economic development, and Ododo’s administration has strengthened collaboration among security agencies and community-based security structures.

His security strategy includes stronger community policing, the regularisation of vigilante services and the involvement of local hunters.

Technology has also been deployed to improve surveillance and response to security threats.
For a strategically located state like Kogi, maintaining security is particularly important because insecurity can affect transportation, farming, investment and commercial activity.

The recent procurement of drones and armoured vehicles by the state government speak volumes of the governor’s commitment towards security of live and property.

The governor has continue reiterate it resolve not to negotiate with criminals and has demonstrated renewed strength and capacity to make the state a no go area for terrorists.

  1. Lokoja Ultra-Modern Market
The construction of an ultra-modern market in Lokoja represents another significant infrastructure intervention.

The project is designed to replace an ageing and potentially hazardous market environment while providing a more organised setting for traders and commercial activities.

The state government identifies the market among the administration’s major infrastructure projects, alongside road development and healthcare interventions.

Beyond its physical structure, a modern market can contribute to improved trading conditions, urban organisation and economic activity.

  1. Kogi International Airport Project
Perhaps one of the administration’s most ambitious projects is the Kogi International Airport initiative.

The state government has described the proposed airport as a strategic project designed to take advantage of Kogi’s geographical position, proximity to the Federal Capital Territory and mineral resources.

Government has said that consultants completed design stages and that procurement processes were being pursued.

Because the project is capital-intensive, its ultimate significance will depend on successful completion, financing, operational viability and the economic benefits it generates.

Certainly, this would strengthen Kogi’s connectivity and support investment, tourism, agriculture and the mining sector.

  1. Improved Governance and Financial Management
The Ododo administration has also placed emphasis on financial management and institutional reforms.

The state government has pointed to measures aimed at improving internally generated revenue, reducing leakages and strengthening accountability.

Conclusion

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration has recorded a broad range of interventions since 2024, with infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, workers’ welfare and security emerging as some of its principal areas of focus.

The strongest evidence of the administration’s approach can be seen in its simultaneous investment in physical infrastructure and human development: roads and markets on one hand, and schools, healthcare centres, bursaries and workers’ welfare on the other.

Ultimately, the administration of Gov. Ahmed Usman Ododo is already implementing agenda aimed at building a more secure, united, prosperous and economically productive state.
