The Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Command, has confirmed the death of a 30-year-old teacher, Maryam Usman, following injuries she allegedly sustained after being assaulted by the father of a pupil she disciplined at a private school in Olamaboro local government.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, disclosed that the incident occurred on June 18, 2026, when the suspect, identified as Abdullahi Ishaka, allegedly stormed the school, Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Okpo District, alongside two women and attacked the teacher over disciplinary action she had taken against his child.

According to the police, Usman was rushed to a hospital in Ugbamaka shortly after the assault. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo for further treatment.

Despite efforts by medical personnel, the teacher succumbed to her injuries on June 25.

ASP Afusat said the suspects fled the scene before police officers arrived, adding that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest all those involved.

She stated that once the suspects are apprehended, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation and possible prosecution.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the safety of teachers and the increasing cases of violence against education workers while carrying out their professional duties.

The police assured the public that investigations are ongoing and pledged to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
