Kogi State Governor, Capt. Idris Wada, on Thursday, said the 2012 flooding in the state displaced about 623,690  persons.

The floods, he added, washed away 304,775 hectares of farmlands and destroyed 61,775 houses.

The governor, who spoke when the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation visited some of the flood-affected communities in the state, noted however that only a few persons died in the disaster.

Represented by his deputy, Yomi Awoniyi, the governor said the floods wreaked havoc in nine local government areas of the state.

Describing the incident as unprecedented, the governor said the floods pulled down many houses and eroded many farmlands.

The situation, according to him, disorganised many family as well as degraded their environment.

The governor, who promised to provide support for the victims, said the state government had set up 87 camps for the displaced persons.

He commended the Federal Government, international and donor agencies, corporate organisations and individuals for their assistance, saying their contributions mitigated the effects of the disaster.

The leader of the delegation, John Owoicho, said the team was in the state to assess the damage.

Conveying the sympathy of President Goodluck Jonathan to the state and the victims, Owoicho said beside the initial Federal Government assistance, the committee would recommend more measures to cushion the effects of the disaster.
