Facts emerged, on Saturday, on reasons the Kogi State governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, raised the alarm on the presence of Boko Haram members in the state.

The governor’s statement may not be unconnected with the arrest of high ranking members of the sect by security operatives in the state.

Apart from the arrest, members of the sect had, in 2015, attempted to invade the state office of the State Security Service (SSS) with the aim of freeing some of their members that were detained by the SSS.

A high ranking member of the group was said to have been arrested in 2016 while attending the naming ceremony of his son at the Army Barracks in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

Also, the SSS last month disclosed that two top commanders of the sect that fled the Northeastern part of the country, following the Army operations, were arrested in the state.

Following the upsurge in criminal activities in the state, security operatives stepped up their operations, leading to the arrest of two other members of the sect in the Kogi Central Senatorial district.

The arrest effected by men of the Army Records Command, Lokoja, led to the recovery of weapons and face masks with Boko Haram inscriptions on them.

Although there has not been any major attack by the sect, government was of the belief that the presence of members of the group in the state posed security threat.

Speaking when the criminals, including the suspected Boko Haram members, were paraded by the Army, the state governor said he would continue to invest in security to make the state safe.

He said: “We are going after them; we will get them and we are getting them. Security agents and the entire people must be vigilant. My administration will not condone any form of criminality.  Wherever they are, we will smoke them out”.
