As efforts gears on towards ensuring a better life for all across the globe, residents of Lokoja and three other major towns in Kogi State may soon begin to enjoy world class basic necessities of life.

The provision of these basic infrastructural facilities which is the brainchild of the United Nations Organization is to elevate the standard of living in ten cities across the globe including Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, Dekina, Kabba and Okene.

Speaking to The Graphic in Lokoja on the latest development, the Chief Technical Adviser to Kogi State Government on United Nations Habitat, Mr. Joseph Alasan affirmed that the programme is aimed at providing city Structure plan for four urban centers within Kogi State.

Mr. Alasan who further explained that the project was a collaborative initiative of the United Nation and Kogi State Government, disclosed that the habitat project encompasses provision of structure plan, solid waste management, urban governance, urban observatory and General Information System [GIS] for the state.

The Technical Adviser, who equally mediates between the state government and the United Nations habitat, also oversees the activities of eight consultants employed by the UN Habitat to prepare the structure plan for Kogi State.

The programme which has duration of 20 years is to be executed in phases with the first phase being the city structure plan already in full swing.

He further explained that the consultant in collaboration with his office had also employed the services of Research Assistants to go to the field and administer questionnaires to individuals as well as carry out Rapid Urban Sector Profiling for Sustainability [ROSPS], an approach which according to him, was aimed at involving all stakeholders in the project.

While explaining further that the structure plan involves an awareness creation programme, he emphasized the role of the media organizations in the state as of great support to the ongoing awareness campaign and visit to traditional rulers in the affected towns. He pointed out that the sensitization programme would culminate in town hall meetings scheduled to commence from April this year.
