To some people, integrity is “being yourself” and “sticking to your beliefs”. But in broader sense, integrity is more than just honesty – it means being well intentioned too, “putting people first” and being “someone to look up to”.
Rt.Hon Umar Ahmed Imam who currently represents Lokoja | state constituency and SDP candidate for the August 11th Lokoja koto federal constituency Bye-election exemplifies this, as did Nelson Mandela, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Mahatma Gandhi, Barack Obama, etc. Leaders with integrity speak their own mind and when they do they give voice to voters’ own beliefs, impressively so.
Hon Umar Ahmed Imam, no doubt, has walked the walk of the mightiest. When all heroes are ever gathered, known in the liberation struggle and actualisation of the Africa dream, he fits perfectly into that mold. He is one perfect icon who has created breeding ground for visionary and dynamic democrats, who are concerned about making his constituency work. His politics is serious with unparallel passion. Thus, giving us a new definition of a modern purposeful politics.
Evidently, he has the hand of a surgeon and accuracy of an architect to gather the relics of broken destiny and fix it back. He is one of the political wonders, long awaited not just in Lokoja, but in Kogi state entirely.
Imam does not just provide succour and respite for the needy in diverse ways, he nourishes them as well, even at his own expense, this is rare and phenomenal in our body politic. He does not only offer quality representation at the Parliament but his services to his constituents and contributions to our democracy are innumerable.
Hon Imam has combined the ingenuity of a legislator per excellence with humility and genuine feelings and thoughts for the less privileged; he is consistent in giving ingenious advice all the time. He epitomizes generosity, care and affection while also symbolizing the assured reward for single-minded commitment to the ideals of diligence, humility, perseverance, focus, dedicated service, forthrightness and outstanding patriotism.
These qualities will continue to be a source of inspiration to all those individuals whose lives he has touched directly and indirectly in various important ways. Sadly, and this is not new though, some of the beneficiaries of his kindness and benevolence still turn against him in the end, but he is not perturbed, nothing can get him distracted in adding positive values to peoples lives.
However, the pain of betrayal is a dark thread running through all of human history, as unfaithful friends and lovers break promises, reveal confidences, and sacrifice love on the altar of vainglory. It’s an ugly depiction of human nature, as the weakest among us choose to defile God’s greatest gift instead of honoring it. They choose the inability to love over love. They choose hell over heaven, painfully so. It is only appropriate to commit such people with vicious, treacherous and reprehensible trait to God the final arbiter to accordingly judge them.
All good men and women must take responsibility to create legacies that will meritoriously take the next generation to a level no one could ever imagine. The most influential people, the ones who leave behind incredible legacies like late Buba, will live on in the hearts of the people he touch, his principles, philosophies and achievements will become immortal, spreading from generation to generation. May God bless and continue to strengthen Imam such that the larger society can be better for it.
