“Think National, Think Nigeria”, Gov. Bello Urges NYSC Members

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has admonished NYSC members on the importance of fostering national consciousness during their service year, and therefore charged them to “think national and think Nigeria”.
The governor made the call on Monday at the closing ceremony of the 1,711 corps members deployed to the state for the 2017 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1, at the NYSC orientation camp, Asaya, Kabba.
Bello, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Arome Adoji, advised the corps members to remain patriotic and play active role in skill manpower supply to enrich the public and private sectors of the economy during the service year.
“It gladdens the heart to observe obvious transformation in the lives of this set of corps members in matters of integrity, discipline and national consciousness.
“This is why this laudable scheme has remained dominant force in national mobilization, national growth and the promotion of national unity.
“The NYSC scheme is also noted for its unique role in achieving the development of communities among the corps members who are encouraged to work together as representatives of this country.
“Today, new vistas of opportunity for community development efforts and self improvement are opened to the new set of corps members.
“The introduction of Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme for corps members with a department solely dedicated to coordinating and managing the skills programme has become a welcome development in the NYSC in recent times.
“I urge you to get into the efforts of the managers of the NYSC scheme to which stems the tide of unemployment among the Nigerian youths, so that you are able to achieve self dependency and financial freedom”, Bello advised.
Bello, however called on the management of the NYSC to revamp Corps Employers Forum, The Corps Members Forum, stressing that the assemblies of this nature have improved the empowerment for positive change, and quality of life.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Oludolapo Ahile, said the NYSC orientation course had inculcated discipline in corps members and made them imbibed good work ethics for their primary assignment.
She added that it has also equipped the corps members with practical, social and leadership skills required for the challenges of the service year.
Ahile stressed that the NYSC had strictly follow its posting policy which focuses on rural development, saying “we are here to serve the people of Kogi by contributing towards the New Direction Policy”.
She urged the corps members to play role models to their host communities and make the people economically vibrant and self sustained.
She further advised them to excel and become the next generation of achievers and leaders who would be committed to selfless service to their host communities and nation at large.
Ahile commended the governor for camp renovation, construction of more hostel and quarters for camp officials, and the ongoing construction of the perimeter fencing of the camp.
She said: “We are indeed very grateful, it is our hope that the contractor would speed up work for quick completion
of all the laudable projects”.
