He spent two years in police custody but was later released in April 2017 on bail. He was later arrested again on the 27th of June 2021 and the Nigerian government accused him of enhancing and encouraging violence through his posts, television and Biafra radio talk show.

The leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu was apprehended by the international criminal police while seeking foreign support for the actualization of the republic of Biafra 2021.

Contrary to reports, the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu is not missing but still in the custody of the department of state services, his lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, clarified on Monday. It’s also confirmed that some approved family members of the IPOB leader visited Kanu in the DSS custody on July 14th.

The Nigerian court of appeal on October 13th 2022, in its judgment discharged and acquitted Kanu of all the charges leveled against him by the Nigerian government and ordered his immediate and unconditional released from detention.

The Department of State Service (DSS) has released Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) to undergo an independent medical examination.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, said the IPOB leader underwent a medical examination in an unnamed hospital in Abuja on Friday.

According to the statement by Ejiofor; “we are pleased to inform you Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu met his choice personal physician yesterday (Friday) in a hospital in Abuja, outside the facility of the state security service  (SSS) as part of the protocol, I witnessed the consultation. The medical examination was seamless and productive, and he (Kanu) will be progressing to the next stage soon.

Kanu has been incarcerated by the DSS since June 2021, when he was arrested and repatriated from Kenya.

While in custody, Kanu repeatedly asked for an independent medical examination of his health condition.

Kanu has been in the DSS facility since June 2021 when he was arrested and subjected to extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria.

Despite the appeal court ordering his release after discharging and acquitting him of terrorism charges, the Nigerian government has refused to grant him freedom. But Ekpa had claimed that Kanu’s health was deterioration and that he may die if nothing is done fast.

The United Kingdom court of appeal has fixed June 22, 2023 to hear the appeal of the detained leader of the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s extraordinary rendition.
