Sweden-based Footballer Donate Jerseys and Balls to St Augustine, Kabba

Nigeria international and Mjallby defender Gbenga Arokoyo has donated a pack of complete jerseys and five grade A-balls to Saint Augustine College Kabba’s Football team in Lokoja, Kogi State.

The Kogi-born defender who hails from Kabba in the Western senatorial district of Kogi state plies his football career in Sweden and have played for two successive seasons with the top league outfit, Mjallby scoring a goal since joining in early January, 2012.

Speaking with newsmen in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, Arokoyo who was a former student and player of the College disclosed that the gesture was in view of “giving back to his root”.

The Brazil 2014 World Cup hopeful admitted that he decided to contribute his quota to encourage and support the discovery of young football talents at the College.

“I am glad to contribute my widows mite to the course of developing football and to encourage talents. Saint Augustine is my alma-mata and for this I think it is necessary to give back to the society where we have gotten so much from. I believe the pack of jersey and five balls when judicious used will aid the school team in trainings and reduce cost of acquiring high-quality balls.

“I will wish to use this medium to plead with our politicians, government officials at all levels to support the course of developing football talents”, the former Kwara United Football Club defender advocated.

While expressing delight at the growing trend in talents discovery in Kogi State, the uncapped twice Super Eagles’ invitee urged well-to-do individuals, organisations and governments at all levels to use the development of football and sports in general as a viable means of empowering and engaging the youths as such products could become national heroes.

Arokoyo was an integral part of the Nigeria’s U-20 male national team, Flying Eagles that won the U-20 CAF African Youth Championship under Coach Sam John Obuh in South Africa in 2011, a then teammate of Chelsea and Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo
