Due to my busy schedule despite the lockdown here in Abeokuta, I couldn’t pay serious attention to the video featuring Senator Smart Adeyemi until earlier today. I took time to read various reactions and my only deduction is that many are still ignorant of the wily ways of politicians especially the merchants among the lot.
For being brought from the brink of helpless hopelessness, Sen. Adeyemi must be eternally grateful to Alh. Yahaya Bello as the person God used to save the Senator from political incarceration and economic doom. Certainly, Alhaji Yahaya Bello gave a lifeline and saved somebody from imminent suicide.
Sen. Adeyemi had no option than to debunk the mischievous insinuations of detractors who insisted the returnee Senator will eventually betray his benefactor, Alh. Yahaya Bello.
Based on antecedents, the busybodies might not be entirely wrong as the Senator is renowned for biting fingers that once fed him. That is a story for another day when his ‘friends’ decide to be unfortunate in their response to this narrative.
These mischief makers should understand that only a demon in the Devil’s bedroom Cabinet will return from the political and economic wilderness Sen. Adeyemi was forced to relocate after the 2015 general election and not be born again. That other side of life experience. Sen. Adeyemi had which he never knew existed will definitely put fear into the hearts of the most haughty and arrogant of men.
My grouse with the Distinguished Senator’s open proclamation of loyalty is not his reiteration of absolute loyalty but the open confession that he will not bother to advise the Governor even if he contemplates certain decisions with the tendency to ridicule the Governor’s tenure. That is nothing but hogwash. Alh. Yahaya Bello is human and thus fallible which necessitated his appointment of Aides and Advisers; Special and Senior.
As an Elder, one would expect Sen. Adeyemi to be a voice of reason to guide the Governor on certain governance issues. Sadly, Sen. Smart Adeyemi will rather see or hear no wrong as far as the actions and utterances of the Governor is concerned.
The only refreshing aspect of Sen. Adeyemi’s bogus loyalty declaration is the frankness of its dishonesty. At least other people in his situation will pretend to care about the truth. But, Adeyemi doesn’t. Amusingly, Sen. Smart Adeyemi has one refreshing vice: he lies in public, in open, all the time.
Loyalty is giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a person or institution.
While sycophancy is excessive and servile behaviour towards someone important in order to gain advantage.
The definitions above is just a pointer to a grand game of Smart deception.
When the compromised speaks, the voice of credibility vanishes. In its place, a certain niggling sense of hypocrisy and weakness prevails as aptly and copiously displayed by Sen. Smart Adeyemi.
Time we are told is the revealer of all things and in time the truth of the Senator’s proclamation of absolute loyalty to Alh. Yahaya Bello will be seen. How he will succeed in caging his ambition if and when it does not align with the political situation in 2023 will be the stuff political thrillers are produced from.
Alh. Yahaya Bello from his actions since the inauguration of his second term appears to have gotten a grip on governance and should be able to identify and differentiate between total loyalty and insidious sycophancy.
Interesting times really lay ahead for political merchants, actors, players and followers.
