In order to ameliorate the hardship faced by the people and to enhance socio-economic development, Oganenigu community in Dekina Local Government of Kogi State has commenced a major repair work on one of its access roads, the 22 kilometers Etutekpe-Oganenigu road.

The project, which is entirely the initiative of the community, is wholly funded by contributions by sons and daughters of the community, both at home and in diaspora.

In retrospect, the coordinating platform, Oganenigu People’s Mandate (OPM), had around middle of 2020 started plans towards actualising palliative work on the road during the dry season. This was followed with calls for donations and contributions, which attracted huge enthusiasm from the people.

This development is coming after serial failed promises by government to construct the road.

It would be recalled that the Governor of the state, Yahaya Bello, had on the heels of the herdsmen mayhem in the Oganenigu community in March 2018, defied the dilapidated state of the road to visit the community. During the visit, Governor Bello promised to take immediate action on the road to restore the dignity of the people of the area.

Almost two years after, the state government is yet to mention the road after series of emissaries were sent to the Governor by the community.

Where things are done right, Oganenigu qualifies to be designated as the “food basket and forest reserve area” of the state because of its huge but largely untapped resource due to bad roads.
