Kogi State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Alhaji Abdulahi Ibrahim, has said that over 80 per cent of commercial motorists operating in the state are not qualified.

Speaking yesterday at a one-day sensitisation workshop on speed limit device organised by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Lokoja for stakeholders in the transport sector, Ibrahim said many of the drivers did not attend driving schools as prescribed by law.

The commissioner said he got the information through his interaction with the people storming his office daily to process vehicle particulars, adding that those involved were also believed to have obtained their driving licenses through the back door.

He decried the obsession for fairly used tyres popularly called Tokunbo by commercial motorists, urging the FRSC to discourage the trend to reduce carnage on roads.

Ibrahim commended the FRSC for initiating the move to enforce speed limit on vehicles operating on the nation’s highways, saying that the decision would go al long way to safeguard lives and property.

The commissioner called on participants at the workshop, which included officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and security agencies to share their knowledge of advantages of speed limit devices with other Nigerians.

Earlier in his address, the Acting Zonal Commander of the FRSC in charge of North-Central, Mr. Abayomi Omiyale, said that the workshop was organised following the discovery that over 65 per cent of road crashes recorded between January and July 2013 were due to speed limit violation.

He said that FRSC would henceforth enforce the regulations on speed violation with a view to sanctioning disobedience.

Omiyale, however, urged motorists to install speed limit devices in their vehicles to avoid the wrath of the commission.
