Information is factual data that can be accessed, verified and transformed in other forms for valuables.
An information society according to the online American dictionary of English latest version “is a society where the creation, distribution, use, integration and manipulation of information is a significant in political, economic and cultural activities”.
Library is a collection of information resources that organize, maintain and disseminate information at a very quick time and space. And again, a public library is a library for all irrespective of your status.
It also mean a library that provide information for the generality of the public without discrimination and limitation to any persons.
Now information is on the high side, indeed, it has become a means of human survival. For that reason that in every society there is a struggle to key in for a better economy, healthcare, security, politics, education and cultural well-being with a quest for having in place a well established informational institution like community information centers called public library.
The Internet has come to stay, I am not contesting the fact, but it cannot take over the position of the Library as much information on the internet is not from a reliable source and lacked practicality.
For any intellectual content work to be more robust and more authoritative its source must be vigorous to enable research development and innovation.
This is exactly what a library does, be it traditional library, polymedia or hybrid libraries. In an information society information management and censorship are strong weapons for building national block and promoter of national unity within and at large.
Today, information and paperless society are being measured based on the standard of public library elected and traction from information usage. An excellent example of this attribute is Manchester City in Britain and its Public Library which is the best so far in the world.
These are reasons why Public Library Initiative must be encouraged by every society either small or big.
Conclusively, Nigeria as a giant and number one strong economy in Africa must lead by example for others to follow.
With the above aforementioned, by prioritizing its budgets on information for all other segments of her cycle to survive or else African will remain a third world countries. While America, Europe and the rest of the developed world will continue to grow rapidly and higher as much as beyond imagination.
