One of the greatest mistakes we make is giving everyone access to our lives and decisions. Not every person who speaks to you has earned the right to influence you. Some voices come from wisdom; others come from fear, envy, ignorance or experience that was never meant to become your instruction.
A loud voice is not necessarily a wise voice.
The Bible says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). There are many voices in the world, but the child of God must learn to distinguish the voice of God from the noise of men.
Some people will tell you that your dream is impossible because they have never seen it happen. Others will discourage you because your progress exposes their own limitations. Listen respectfully, but do not surrender your direction to every opinion.
Even success must be examined carefully. The prosperity of an unbeliever is not proof that God approves his ways, just as the struggles of a believer are not proof that God has abandoned him. Psalm 37:1–2 reminds us not to fret because of evildoers, because their apparent flourishing is temporary.
Do not compare your chapter with another person’s chapter. One person may receive an opportunity quickly while another waits for years. God’s timing, preparation and purpose are not identical for everyone.
Before you allow a voice to shape your life, ask: Does this advice agree with God’s Word? Does it produce wisdom or confusion? Is the person speaking from truth, or merely from personal experience?
Not every voice deserves a vote in your life.
Listen to counsel, but test it. Respect people, but do not worship their opinions. Learn from experience, but do not make another person’s journey the blueprint for your destiny.
Pray. Work. Wait. Discern.
And when the voices around you become many, return to the One whose voice matters most.
