The military regime of Abdulsalam Abubakar marked the era of transition to a democratically elected government in Nigeria which subsequently ushered in Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1999, his government could be said to be one of the best in the history of Nigeria.
Nigeria has been through thick and thin to be at this stage, 19 years after, what has been the gain of democracy in Nigeria? Can we really say that Nigeria is truly a democratic society? Democracy as we commonly know is said to be “government of the people, by the people and for the people.” Now, can we really say that the government has been for the people, I painfully say No. In a democracy day lecture organised by the Department of History and International Studies, Kogi State University, Anyigba, on the 29th of May, 2018, Professor Sam Egwu asserts that “while there has been a remarkable success in the conduct of elections in Nigeria since 1999, this has failed to transform the life of the people”, I cannot agree less with his position.
However, Nigeria is still nascent compared to countries like the United States of America, Britain where we copy democracy from, I strongly believe that with time, experience and observation, Nigeria’s democracy would be compared to the United States. No country can be said to have achieved a complete true democracy, democracy is a peregrination and a continuous process.
So, there is still hope for Nigeria, there is need for more implementation of cautious policies in enhancing democracy, the county’s domestic interest should be taken into consideration, if we all put the country first, I believe that the country will thread the path of development and improve democracy which will transform the life of the citizens for the better.
I will like to use this medium to urge the youths of Adavi Local Government, the people of Kogi State and Nigerians in general to participate actively in electing the best amongst leaders in the 2019 elections.
