- Promotes Device Checker Tool to shield consumers from substandard phones
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting telecommunications consumers through greater awareness, better service delivery and effective regulation of the sector.
Mrs Maryan Gwandu, who represented the Director of Zonal Operations, Mr Usman Malla, gave the assurance on Friday at a sensitisation programme on data management, consumer protection and regulatory initiatives at Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.
Gwandu said the programme was designed to educate consumers on their rights and responsibilities. Topics included effective data management, SIM management, unsolicited messages, service quality and mobile number portability.

She urged consumers to protect their personal information, report service deficiencies and use the available mechanisms for lodging complaints.
NCC team lead, Mrs Anthonia Ita-Nyong said the polytechnic was chosen because students rely heavily on data for research, assignments and other academic activities.

She highlighted the Commission’s Device Checker initiative, which lets consumers verify whether their mobile phones are type-approved. She said the tool protects users against substandard devices.
The Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof. Sanusi Avidime, was represented by his Deputy, Prof. Godwin Onamah. He commended the NCC for the initiative and urged students to use the programme to understand their rights and responsibilities as telecommunications consumers.
Two participants, Rahanat Ohunene and Jethro Ariyo, described the programme as educative and beneficial. They said it equipped students and lecturers with knowledge of effective data management and protection against cyber threats.
