Kogi State government has dismissed reports that it is planning to appoint caretaker committees to manage the affairs of local government councils in the state.
In a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Evang Kingsley Fanwo in Lokoja on Saturday, the state government insisted that its desire to conduct local government elections.
Fanwo said the state government will no longer subscribe to unconstitutional structure at the local government level.
“As a promoter of constitutionalism under the leadership of Governor Yahaya Bello, the state government wishes to make it clear that it will not subscribe to putting in place governmental structures that are alien to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“By the constitution of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), the state government has demonstrated readiness to conduct election in order to enable the people determine their representatives at the third tier of government.
“We urge the people of our dear State to believe in the resolve of the state government not to subscribe to any unconstitutional structure at the local government level as the Governor is committed to conducting a free, fair and credible local government election as soon as legally practicable. Whatever will be done between now and the conduct of the election will be constitutional,” he assured.
