Lassa Fever: Kogi Doctors Hold Procession in Honour of Late Ahmed Victor

Medical Doctors across  Kogi State gathered in Lokoja on Tuesday to pay their last respect to one of their own, Dr. Idowu Ahmed Victor, who died after contracting Lassa Fever.
Late Dr. Ahmed died on Sunday evening in Irua Edo State at the age of 30.
At a procession held at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja, doctors chanted songs of sorrows as they mourn the loss a great colleague.
Addressing the bereaved doctors, the Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Dr Olatunde Alabi said the hospital in collaboration with relevant agencies are working round the clock to stop further spread of the outbreak.
“The late Dr. Victor Ahmed is one of our new doctors here and he has been very hardworking and dedicated to his duties. We are aware that there is an epidemic in the country and we are trying to put our own measures in place so that we do don’t have further spread of the disease,” he said
The Kogi State Chairman Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Dr Godwin Tijani told our correspondent that those that had contact with the deceased have been quarantined.
According to him,  “We feel saddened by the death of one of our colleagues.  He is a young chap who joined us recently and after two months he is no more. We will forever miss him.
“As I speak to you, some of his colleagues who had contact with him have been quarantined and some of them have started taking drugs.
“I can’t be precise with the numbers of those being quarantined because the numbers keeps increasing.
“NMA, Kogi State Ministry of Health and the management of of Federal Medical Center have swung into action by keeping  a close watch on the deceased family members, especially those who have had contact with him.”
On the effort of NMA to stop further spread of the disease, he disclosed that the body has embarked on extensive enlightenment campaigns on the need for the general public to know more about Lassa Fever, its cause and how it can be prevented.
