Yesterday Sunday 24th June 2018, at the conference hall, Valencia Hotels Abuja FCT, the Honourable Member representing Ankpa I State Constituency and the Deputy majority leader of Kogi State House of Assembly, Honorable Ahmed Mohammed and Honorable members of the sixth assembly all gathered for a roundtable discussion on a Bill for a law to establish Kogi Youth Development Commission.
Recall that, on Tuesday 6th March, 2018, Hon. Ahmed Mohammed sponsored a bill for an act to establish Kogi Youth Development Commission and other matters connected therewith 2018. This bill scaled through its first and second reading and has been referred to the committee for proper scrutiny.
Due of the importance of this bill to the youths of Kogi State, Several Non-governmental organizations and Civil Society Organizations such as the Voice of Youth Initiative (VOYI), National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Kogi State Chapter, ActionAid Nigeria, the British Council, Youth Emancipation for The Society Project (YES), Initiative for Grassroots Advancement (INGRA) Socio-Economic Research and Development Council (SERDEC), Etc have indicated interest by partnering to ensure that the bill sees the light of the day.
While declaring the roundtable session open, Hon. Ahmed Mohammed in his speech outline the importance of the bill to the state government and the teeming youths. He said when assented to, it will develop and empower youths by creating job opportunities, boost the state IGR by making significant contributions to the GDP of the state. It will also bring about sustainability on youth developments and empowerment programs within the state.
The President of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Kogi State Chapter, Comrade Oladele John Nihi in his brief remarks appreciates the effort of the Honourable members so far on the bill, noting that we need sustainable policies and programs for young people that is why we need a commission for the youths.
Mr. Ibrahim Faruk of Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA) Africa, in his presentation also explained in detailed the importance of the Kogi State Youth Development Commission by serving as an instrument to inspire the creative and innovative energies of all Kogi Youth residents and reduce unemployment across state. The commission will also have the mandate to draw support from development partners, international donor agencies and the Federal government.
Members who contributed include; The Speaker of the KGHA, Rt. Hon. Prince Mathew Kolawole, who assured speedy passage of the bill, The Majority Leader Hon. Bello Hassan Abdullahi Balogun, The Chief whip Hon. Victor Adewale Omofaiye, Hon. Haruna Idoko Musa, Hon. Alfa Momoh Rabiu, Hon. Linus Enenche, Hon. Lawi AT Ahmed and Hon. Moses Edoko Ododo.
The programme manager humanitarian, ActionAid Nigeria in his closing remarks appreciates the Honourable members for making time despite their tight schedules. He called on the Honourable members to write their name in gold by ensuring that the youths of Kogi State have a youth development commission. “I am also hopeful that the youthful governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello will do the needful by assenting to the bill once it gets to his table”, he said.
