It is no longer news that academic staff of Kogi State University (KSU) has been on strike for more than five months and all efforts were made at calling off the strike but were proved abortive.
The strike action that was embarked upon by ASUU, KSU chapter has entered another phase and I termed this as season two.
Episodes 1, particularly after the visit of His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello to the institution with an optimism that all the issue will be resolved.
Given the speech presented by the governor, he mentioned categorically that “for peace to reign, he is going to pay everybody including those that were uncleared during the screening exercise”, I was overwhelmed with joy as if the institution is going to resume it activities the following day but I was later disappointed when the governor said that for the Earned Academic Allowance, he will resume paying it when ASUU resume school activities and ASUU on the other hand are saying government should pay before they can resume.
The case between ASUU and state government can now be likened to a football match with so many fans (students and parents) on both sides. Now both teams are in the second half of the match now and if nothing is done, extra time will be added but my fear is that the system keeps deteriorating day by day.
Now that ASUU has maintained their grand that until government pay they will not resume, then for the governor to prove to us that he really meant what he said during the visit and that his visit is not an eye service visit, let him pay them and see if ASUU will not resume school the following day.
