Kogi state wrestlers bagged a total of 6 gold medals at the just concluded invitational wrestling tournament held in Awka, Anambra state.
The wrestling tournament held between 17th to 20th August, 2016 had in attendance over 200 wrestlers from 6 different states of the country.
The following confluence warriors won gold medals in different categories, Friday Godwin (58kg) won 2 gold medals, Yakubu Saliu (66kg) also won 2gold medals while Peter Jonah (54kg) and John Momoh in Greco-Roman (54kg) won 1 gold medal apiece.
The head coach, Kogi state wrestling association, Philip Momoh said the wrestlers are ready to take on other teams that will be present at the National Youth Games scheduled for next month.
The Olympian said the state wrestlers are hungry for national and international tournament in order to make both their state and the country proud.
He called on corporate bodies to invest in sports as it is one of the ways of curbing social vices and crime in the country.
Momoh said there is need for relevant sports administrators to embark on aggressive grassroot developmental programs if the nation is to emerge on the podium in Tokyo 2020.
Ebonyi state emerged 1st position winning 15 gold, 8 silver and 2 bronze medals, in 2nd position was Kano state with 11 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals, Kogi state was 3rd while Anambra state won 4 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze.
