The Senator representing Kogi West senatorial district and chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Dino Melaye, has commiserated with the people of Lokoja local government area of Kogi State and families of victims of the unfortunate tanker fire in Lokoja last Friday.
In a statement issued on Saturday, personally signed by the lawmaker, he described the incident as “avoidable tragedy” if concerned authorities had done their job of fixing the Abuja – Lokoja road, which is notorious for road crashes.
“The sad incident, which occurred at the Lokoja end of Felele – Okene – Abuja Road and claimed the lives of no fewer than 25 persons including destruction of properties, was an avoidable tragedy if the dualisation and expansion of Abuja – Lokoja Expressway had been completed on schedule.
“Our prayers are with the victims and I pray for the repose of the souls of the departed ones and the fortitude for their families to bear the irreparable loss while I also wish the injured ones quick recovery and return to their normal activities,” Melaye said.
The statement added that, “I hope concerned authorities will do the needful by putting the bad portions of the busy road in shape and complete the ongoing expansion and dualisation works on time in order to avoid a repeat of the Friday tragedy.”
“As as lawmaker, I will continue to attract development to my constituency and draw the attention of the executive arm of government at all levels to the plight of my constituents at all times,” he assured.
