The President Poultry Association of Nigeria, PAN, Kogi state chapter, Commander Hassan Bello, rtd, has disclosed that lack of access to credit facility is the bane of poultry farmers in the country.

Bello who made this known yesterday in a chat with newsmen while speaking on the challenges facing the poultry farmers said both the state and the federal government have refused to provide the enabling environment for poultry farmers to grow.

He explained that most of the poultry farmers in the state do not have birds in their farms because all their efforts to get credit facility to improve their farms has not been successful due to unreasonable collateral demanded by the commercial banks.

“Poultry farmers are on their own now because government has abandon them and the banks they have given agricultural fund to are not willing to give loan to poultry farmers. The banks recommended to us keep on saying come tomorrow whenever we went there for loan and by the time we get tired, we just have to leave them alone,” he said.

He stressed no poultry farmer has the collateral being demanded by the government designated banks for loan, saying that federal government should open an agricultural bank that will effectively cater for farmers because commercial banks are not farmers’ friendly.

Bello however appealed to the federal government to be realistic in putting up any policy, saying that they should have approached the farmers directly and not giving money to commercial banks or invincible lenders to the detriment of farmers.
