Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Mr Isah Mohammed has finally stepped down following intense pressure mounted by different bodies in the institution.

Various bodies and stakeholders in the institution have insisted that Isah Mohammed’s leadership style is no longer acceptable.

The Public Relations Officer of the school, Luke Tijani confirmed the development.

“Mr Mohammed has officially handed over to his Deputy, Dr Attah Haruna. As I am talking to you now, plans are already in place to appoint a substantive Rector by the visitor of the school. But for now, Dr Haruna will be on acting capacity before a substantive Rector is appointed,” he said.

It will be recalled that during the week, we reported that some suspected thugs allegedly loyal to the former Rector disrupted the sitting of the School Governing Council who wanted to decide his fate in the Polytechnic.

It was reliably gathered that the refusal of Mr Mohammed to step down sparked series of protest from some students of the Polytechnic who allegedly accused him of gross misconduct and under-performance.

The said protest allegedly led to the seizure of the official vehicle of the Student Union Government President.

“The school authority decided to seize the SUG president’s official Vehicle as he could not stop the protest of some students who are calling for the removal of our Rector,” a Source told our correspondent on Friday.

The former Rector whose tenure expires today, 7th September 2018, but seeking for a renewal of his tenure by the visitor of the Polytechnic, Governor Yahaya Bello, did not also get the blessings of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (NASUP) who earlier in the past accused him of anti-labour activities in the institution.

Under his watch, according to some students in the institution who never wanted their names mentioned, students were forced to look for accommodation elsewhere in the town since the school could not provide any in the last two years.

Also, they alleged that the academic performance in the school had dropped drastically compared to the way it was several years ago.
