Kogi state coordinator of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Taofik Olayiwola Lasaki, joined hundreds of corp members in Lokoja metropolis in a public environmental sanitation campaign on Saturday.

Lasaki, who flagged off the exercise on behalf of the Director-General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, led the corp members to sweep and clean the nook and crannies of the state capital.

The Director-General of NYSC, who was represented by Alh. Abdulsalam Mustapha, flagged off the monthly exercise at Lokoja International Market.

In his address, the state coordinator pointed out that the need to enlighten the general public on the health risks of poor hygiene was based on the report of the last HIRD exercise which attributed most ailments diagnosed to poor sanitation habits.

The exercise, according to him, was an avenue to empower the people with adequate information on personal and environmental hygiene with special focus on regular environmental sanitation and proper disposal of waste among others.

The corp members visited various sections of the market square to clean up the cluttered, dirty, filthy gutter and clean the environment, making the vicinity hygienic for buying and selling.

The spokesperson of NYSC Editorial Community Development Service (CDS), Abbas Yahaya, noted that the “sanitation exercise was borne out of the DG’s desire to ensure we reside in a clean and disease-free environment. This is in line with the NYSC DG’s directive aim to serve humanity. The Kogi state NYSC coordinator deemed it fit to take the lead as well and join other Corp members across the nation to have seen the need to maintain cleanliness, which is next to godliness.”

Other staff who participated in the exercise included the Kogi NYSC Desk Officer for COVID-19 Data Sample and Data Collection Team, Mr Etsu Muazu Idris and the Local Government Inspector (LGI),  Mr. Ogunbadejo.
