Kogi state commissioner of youth and sports, Arome Adoji has stated Governor Yahaya Bello’s willingness to develop grassroots sports in the state.
Adoji who spoke at the closing ceremony this year’s Alice Alaba Cadets handball Championship in Kabba on Saturday, lauded the organisers and participating athletes.
On his agendas for sports, he said the current administration has lofty plans which will be rolled out soon and as well pledged to encourage sports athletes in the state.
“The performance of the athletes is wonderful and excellent. I’m very happy to see the children performing beyond expectations despite the meager resources and facilities available at their disposal,” said Adoji.
“If they have the necessary equipment and motivation, they will do the state proud at various championships. The states can have four teams to represent the country in international competitions. It is something encouraging seeing that we have so much talents at the grassroots.
“On this, the state government is already looking at exploring the necessary channels and putting up a template that will revive sports in the state.
“When we came in, we discovered that most of our athletes have been poorly encouraged our sports men and women by previous administrations, which has seen most of them going to represent other states.
“As the commissioner, I’m already putting in place a mechanism to redefine sports as we all know the National Sports Festival is around the corner and we all need to put things right. We have a governor who focused and determined to bring back the state’s lost glory in sports.
“Sadly and shockingly, I got to know there were nothing like grassroot sports and that 80 percent of sports men and women doing the country proud are from Kogi state.
“He [Governor Bello] has requested for a template and that’s what we are currently working on to ensure we get it right and bring back our athletes representing other states. Our priority will surely be on the grassroots sports development and very soon, everyone will see us swinging to action.”
