The new Kogi State Commissioner for water resources, Mr Abdulmumini Danga said that rehabilitation of abandoned waterworks across the state will be given priority attention by the government.

Danga who made the promise in Lokoja on Thursday while receiving the WASH team of the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) said that the move was to make safe water available to the people.

He said that the reticulation of the greater Lokoja waterworks to Felele, Jingbe, Zango, Crusher and other suburbs of the city would also be undertaken.

Danga stated that the state had enough waterworks across the state but lamented that many of them were dilapidated and had been out of use for years.

He said that he had already taken up the matter with the appropriate quarters, assuring that the people will soon start enjoying  regular supply of water in many communities.

Earlier, Mr Simon Enejo had tasked the state government on the need to improve access  to portable in the state.

The JDPC expressed worry over low budgetary provisions in 2018, 2019 and 2020 fiscal bills, urging the Commissioner to halt the trend.

“The JDPC is aware that the challenges in the water sector are enormous but the challenges can be overcome if government pursue these challenges as contained in the goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals with renewed passion and commitment,” he said.

The JDPC is currently implementing a project on improved access to water, hygiene and sanitation in 13 communities spread across the three senatorial districts of the state.
