Kogi State government at the weekend warned illegal miners in the state to stop their activities forthwith or face the wrath of the law.

Special Adviser to Kogi state governor on Solid Minerals, Mr Akerejola Eminefo Otaitie, gave the warning when he visited the State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to seek its supports in tackling the menace.

He said the present administration wants to harness the solid mineral resources that abound in the state, noting that activities of illegal miners had constituted a ‘cog in the wheel of development of the sector’.
“The state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has re-echoed it repeatedly in many fora his interest and desire to develop the solid mineral sector in Kogi state especially now that the price of crude oil had nosedived,” he said.
Responding, State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Obiyo Everestus, assured of its readiness to address the problem, adding that the Command received a circular from its headquarters recently, directing that a unit be set up to combat excesses of illegal miners in the state.
“We will contribute our quota especially now that both the federal and state  governments are making efforts to diversify their economy towards solid minerals and agriculture due to the recent fall in the price of crude oil”, he said.
