Kogi Government on has inaugurated a committee on monitoring of the sales of petroleum products to avoid hoarding and scarcity during festive and election periods in the state.
Inaugurating the committee in Lokoja, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr (Mrs) Folashade Ayoade, said the 7-man committee would monitor the sales of premium motor spirit (PMS) to prevent occasional scarcity during festivities and elections.
“This government is very conscious of the need and importance of PMS to the state economy for movement and in carry our normal duties in day-to-day running.
“The government sees it as a good idea to have a committee to monitor the sales of PMS in Kogi, and that is why the governor has deemed it fit to approve members of the committee for inauguration,” Ayoade said.
According to her, the committee is to ensure evenly distribution of PMS across the state at regular price, especially towards festive periods when petrol are being hoarded and sold as black market, exhorbitant prices and the likes.
“The committee will ensure that PMS is available and well distributed at a regulated standard prices, provides quick response in the event of exigencies and prevent saboteurs from portraying the government in a bad image,” she said.
Mr Otayitie Eminefo, the Special Adviser on Energy and Power to the governor, who is the Committee Chairman and Coordinator, assured the state government that the committee would deliver on its mandate and terms of reference.
Eminefo said that the committee was the initiative of federal government through NNPC in collaboration with Kogi government to ensure that people do not suffer any problem arising from non availability and sales of petroleum products.
“This committee will between now, festive and election periods when traditionally we have fuel crisis, able to monitor the releases of petroleum products from various depots across the country heading towards the state,
“We will provides security and ensure the products are sold at regulated prices and report back to the NNPC on daily basis.
“This is to ensure that the people do not suffer from the lack of these products especially when they are available and are being hoarded by people with bad intentions,” Eminefo said.
He, therefore, warned that the state government would come down heavily on anybody who attempted to behave in a nefarious manner, saying the applicable fine and sanctions by DPR and FG would be applied.
The committee members included: Directors or Representatives from Department of State Security Service (DSS), Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Nigerian Custom Service, Kogi Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Office the SSG, and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
