The events leading to the enthronment of Alhaji Yahya Bello on Kogi State is well known to all Nigerians and therefore needs no restating here.
It is also no news to state that the people of Kogi State have immensely “benefited” from his foisting and the type of governance he brought and for which there is yet no end in sight.
Nigerians and the Kogi State people in particular are also aware of the allegations that the Governor was not a registered voter in Kogi State. The Governor was subsequently alleged to have engaged in double registration an act which is an illegality and a crime. On this note, Nigerians are also aware of the fact that some INEC officials have been disciplined publicly for their part in the clandestine double registration saga.
In the same vein, the world was told by INEC that but for immunity, the Governor would have been prosecuted in line with the laws prohibiting double registration by voters.
However, in spite of the foregoing, the Governor of Kogi State and the All Progressive Congress has been carrying on as if these issues does not matter at all. We have seen moves that clearly shows preparations for a second term even though there is absolutely nothing to show for the one cornered for him under very questionable circumstances.
Nigerians continue to see the Kogi State Governor dropping the name of President at every opportunity. Taking every meeting with President Buhari as a photo-op and invariably touting his purported source of strength. Kogi Governor has not only turned himself to Mr Buhari’s adopted son but Aso Rock as another Lugard House. We saw this with the immediate past Governor as well. Where is he today?
With all these happening in the face of clear despondency and great distraught among the people, it seems little is being done by the opposition, the civil society and well-meaning Kogites to keep in focus the issue of his ineligibilty.
With what the APC did in the past with the fallout of the death of His Excellency, no one should be in doubt that the party is capable of doing much more.
It is obvious the Governor will be handed the APC ticket in spite of the double registration and implications. And when the election comes, no one is sure of what INEC who had earlier declared the double registration an anomaly will do under the APC’s brand of democracy. Same goes with the courts or tribunal and the misery of the people continues.
President Buhari, the APC and the INEC must be called out on the issue of double registration vis-a-vis the continued conduct of the Governor as if the issue of his culpability in the double registration does not matter.
It must be remembered that when election comes, the filthy will exploit the misery of the people for which they are responsible abinito by doling out money and buying votes as well.
Law and order must prevail in matters concerning Kogi State. Condoning illegality is the root of the suffering and underdevelopment of the people.
Kogi must rise!
