Bolanle Amupitan, Kogi Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, on Friday handed over a 25-year-old woman, Memunatu Abdullahi, to the Police, over alleged illegal adoption of a baby.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Amupitan handed over the suspect to the Police in her office in Lokoja.
Amupitan said: “Information reaching me indicates that Memunatu adopted the baby on April 3, 2017, with officials of Ankpa Local Government as witnesses.

“But, when the welfare office of the local government asked her to return the baby, she refused.

“The state government wanted proper documentation of such adoptions and had directed that all babies adopted be returned to the ministry. Other families complied, but Abdullahi refused.”

The commissioner advised families with illegally adopted babies to return them, and vowed to arrest defaulters.

Hadijatu Sanni, Social Welfare Officer of Ankpa Local Government, who spoke on the matter, said that efforts to retrieve the baby from Memunatu and her husband proved abortive until someone assisted the office to trace their hideout.

NAN reports that Memunatu had initially told the commissioner that the baby was hers only for the husband to deny such claim when he was reached on phone.
