The last may not have been heard over the legal tussle over the tenure of Captain Idris Wada as governor of Kogi State as a group, Association of Justice and Good Governance, has called for a fresh gubernatorial election in the state.
The call is coming barely four weeks after the apex court in Abuja reaffirmed the victory of Wada as the rightfully elected governor of the state.
The chairman of the group, Comrade Akuh Guyman, on Wednesday, who led a protest to the State House of Assembly complex, stated that INEC must follow the February 17, 2012 judgement of the Supreme Court, which ordered a fresh election in five states where governors where are enjoying tenure elongation, including Kogi.
The association also called on the assembly to declare Wada’s seat vacant, based on the ‘fact’ that four of the five states conducted a fresh election after the judgement.
It wondered why Kogi State’s case would be different.
According to group, “the Supreme Court judgement of February 17, 2012 declares that the tenure of the five existing governors should stop, and subsequently ordered for a fresh election in the affected states.
“Four of the five states conducted a fresh primary and governorship election, except Kogi State.
“What we are demanding now is that INEC should stop allowing Capt. Idris Wada occupy the governorship seat illegally, as presently, he is just an impostor.
“We demand justice and want INEC to conduct a fresh election in Kogi, just like it did in four other states.”
The association added: “You will recall that the PDP approached the court immediately after the election and the Supreme Court said they didn’t recognise the election that produced Wada.
“We have assembled a legal team to approach the court and seek for the direct interpretation of the February 17, 2012 judgement. We will not rest until the true position of that judgement is made known. We demand justice.”
But in a swift reaction, the state government said the manner in which the group is making its protest and demands was an attestation that it was being sponsored, adding that the members were speaking out of ignorance.
The Special Adviser to the State governor on Media and Strategy, Mr. Jacob Edi, who spoke on behalf of his principal, said the appropriate headquarters, which is the Supreme Court, had given a ‘landslide judgement’ to the situation in January.
