A Civil Society group, Participation Initiative for Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID), has called on the Kogi State government to make primary education free and compulsory to boost girl-child enrollment.

Project Officer of the group Mr Kwalmi E. Kwalmi, made the call at weekend during a discussion programme organized by the organization in collaboration with ActionAid Nigeria and Women Affairs Ministry to address women’s participation in politics.

He said was devastating hence the need for free and compulsory basic education for the girl-child, adding that education was a civil and political right of all.

The Project Officer attributed women’s inactive in politics to myriad of factors ranging from poverty, culture and traditions, lack of unity among the women to nocturnal political meetings, non-appointment of grassroots women and thuggery among others.

Mrs Falilat Razaq, director of women affairs in the ministry, identified poverty as the major impediment to women’s social and political development.

She urged political parties to accord waivers to women that are interested in contesting for political positions.
