The Management of Federal University Lokoja (FUL) on Thursday announced the indefinite suspension of activities and closure of the institution following student protests over the tragic loss of five students in a ghastly motor accident along the Felele axis of the Abuja-Lokoja-Okene highway on Monday.

This is contained in a circular signed by the university’s Registrar, Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie.

She said the decision became very necessary after due consultations with the school management, to forestall further loss of lives and maintain order within the university environment.

According to her, security concerns arising from the escalating situation prompted the institution to act swiftly on the advice of state security agencies.

Core News reported that students of the institution took to the gates of the university in protest, blocking access despite appeals from the university management and interventions by the Kogi State Government in the wake of the tragic incident.

The circular directed all students to vacate the university premises no later than 12 noon on February 20, 2025.

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Kogi State have been duly notified of the development.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Olayemi Durotimi Akinwumi, has yet to make an official statement regarding the possible date for the institution’s reopening.
