The importance of education to humans cannot be overemphasized, education is considered as human right as globally accepted and that should be accorded to all human beings, many international human rights organization consider education as a fundamental human rights of every citizen of a country.
A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF OKUNLAND IN KOGI STATE OF OUR PAST, OUR PRESENT CONDITION AND WHAT THE RESULT MIGHT BE IN THE FUTURE SHALL BE DISCUSSED.
The combination of the five Local Governments Namely Yagba West, Yagba East, Mopamuro, Kabba-Bunu and Ijumu is identified as Okunland. This zone is blessed with beautiful brains and talents, taking a look at Educational aspect of life, Okun is blessed with over three hundred (300) professors and Doctors, Military Generals, great Politicians, in entertainment  industry and in other walks of life, Okunland is well represented.
Looking at the past, majority of these people have benefitted the dividends of good education which made them what they are today, most of these professors enjoyed the benefits of scholarships and bursaries plus a conducive environment for learning, many enjoyed the benefits of free learning aids which made the process then free, no wonder they are what they today.
Okunland is also blessed with a lot of Military Generals, Successful business moguls, Agriculturalist, Lawyers, Engineers, and successful politicians whom all actually benefited from the dividends of education as a right of every child, little wonder they say “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.
In Okunland of today, things are not how its used to be, our education in our land is in sorry state, a visit to some primary schools will amaze you how pupils were seen learning on the floor, uniform tattered, under dilapidated buildings. The situation is worse, no learning aids,  children dropping out of the school, most of these primary schools ended at primary four(4)
Education in the State is nothing to write home about as its in a state of comatose and should be declared state of emergency, the scholarship once enjoyed by parents suddenly disappeared, bursaries for students which used to be a tradition for tertiary institutions has been jettisoned suddenly, teachers salaries are no longer paid as at when due, all these has led to serious fall in the standard of education especially in Kogi State.
All those who benefited from free education, scholarship, bursaries, conducive learning environment, learning aids have pretended not to see this collapse.
The education future of Okunland is blur unless this critical condition is urgently attended to, we shouldn’t wait until all our pupils and students drop out of school before something is done, or must we wait till our children become vagabonds, street urchins, touts before we rise to these challenge?
Were are the professors that once enjoyed the dividends of education?
Where are our Military Generals that has risen to the stage where they are through educational benefits?
Where are our entertainers? When are they coming to give back to the society which they have benefitted from?
Where are our successful business moguls? When are they coming to turn our dear Okunland the industrial hub and economic viable zone of Kogi State and Nigeria at large.
We have challenge you to rise to our aids and save our education from total destruction.
We call on you to assist in providing a conducive learning environment.
We call on business moguls to partner with the government to raise the standard of education, so that these communities will benefit from the social responsibilities.
Our successful politicians should bring back the tradition of scholarships and bursaries, They should also use their political influence to put our school structures in order.
All these will make learning process conducive and attractive that no pupil or students will have cause to drop out of school.
Lets do what’s right to secure the future of the upcoming from total destruction. Let’s together make Okunland a better place and have our names written on a platter of Gold.
At that, the National Association of Okun Students (NAOS) national secretariat ably led by me as the National President, Comrade Ajagun Opeyemi Samuel (Okun Boy) has put together a Summit in April next month tagged: Education for the Development of Okunland; Our Past, Present and the future.
